Take part in a study
Our studies look for better ways to help people sleep and feel well, especially during and after cancer. Taking part is always voluntary.
SleepSteps
Opening in 2027
SleepSteps will test online and telehealth support for sleep problems after a cancer diagnosis.
In Australia and need support now?
If you are struggling, talk to your GP or treating team.
- Cancer Council: 13 11 20, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm
- Lifeline, any time: 13 11 14, or text 0477 13 11 14
- In an emergency, call 000.
Research works better when people with lived experience help shape it: nothing about the community without the community. We are looking for people who have, or have had, cancer, and for family members and carers, to work with us.
This is different from taking part in a study. As a partner, you help us plan and run the research.
SleepSteps Consumer Advisory Committee
Recruiting now
A group of people with lived experience of cancer, across different cancer types, ages and genders, who advise us on the SleepSteps study. Meetings are online.
If you’re interested, use the Email us button above.
What you could do
- Join an advisory committee for one of our studies.
- Review videos, websites and information sheets before they reach participants.
- Help design new studies and choose which questions matter most.
- Help share what we find with the community.
What we offer
- You’ll be paid for your time, and we cover reasonable expenses.
- You don’t need any research experience. Your experience is the expertise.
- You’ll have a named contact, a plain-language introduction and meetings that fit around your health and commitments.
- You can step back at any time.
Community and cancer support organisations
We partner with organisations on co-design, reaching participants and sharing results. We’d love to hear from you.

Study with us
We supervise Honours, Master of Clinical Psychology and PhD students in the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University. Projects can be research-only or include supervised clinical training in sleep interventions.
What supervision looks like
- Weekly one-on-one supervision for Masters and PhD students
- Projects designed with you to finish on time
- Authorship agreed upfront
- Workload negotiated with you, not demanded
Your wellbeing comes before project outcomes. Read our ethics and values.
Current project themes
- SleepSteps: a stepped-care trial of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) after cancer. Projects can use the trial data, or focus on intervention development, AI chat support, qualitative work or clinical delivery.
- Cognition and cancer: cognitive prehabilitation for people having cancer surgery.
- Why people sleep badly: intensive objective and subjective measurement of night waking and falling asleep.
- Precision treatment: who benefits from CBT-I, using individual participant data from 64 trials (7,359 participants).
- Your own idea: our daily diary, wearable and trial data can support many questions.
For some programs the School decides who supervises whom, so it isn’t up to us. You can always get in touch, and name our group as your preference when you’re asked.
