Doctoral Students

Helena R. Bean | 2017 - 2020 | DPsych (Clinical)

Helena Bean completed her Bachelor of Arts (with Honours) in Psychology at the University of Melbourne in 2016. She commenced her Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) in 2017 with supervisors Dr Joshua Wiley and Dr Bei Bei from Monash University, and collaborating with Ms Justine Diggens (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre) and Dr Lesley Stafford (The Royal Women’s Hospital. Helena ran the SleepWell Trial, a clinical trial at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre aiming to improve sleep and well-being in women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. The trial utilized a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and light therapy to target symptoms of sleep disturbance and fatigue. Throughout her clinical training, Helena has completed placements at a number of public hospitals and community mental health services, working with both high and low prevalence psychiatric presentations in adults, children and infants. She completed her Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) in 2020.


Lin Shen | 2017 - 2021 | PhD

Linda Shen completed her Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) and Honours in Psychology at Monash University, before commencing her PhD in 2017. Under the supervision of Dr. Bei Bei and Dr. Joshua F. Wiley, her research examines the daily relationships between adolescents’ sleep-wake cycle, with wellbeing and functioning outcomes (e.g., affect, cognitive performance). She has received recognition for her research internationally through a citation poster award from the American Psychosomatic Society and nationally through a travel award from the Australasian Sleep Association to present her work at Sleep Down Under.


Yan Chi Tung | 2018 - 2021 | PhD (Clinical)

Natasha Tung completed her Bachelor of Arts and Honours in Psychology at the University of Melbourne in 2016. Since then, she worked as a Research Assistant on a project to help Internet browsing among visually-impaired populations, as a teaching associate at Monash University and as a personal development program coach with young individuals aged 7 to 17 years old. Natasha commenced her PhD (Clinical Psychology) in the Monash Behavioural Medicine Lab under the supervision of Dr Joshua Wiley and Dr Linda Luecken (Arizona State University) in 2018. She is currently looking at the impact of early family environment, parental upbringing and resilience on how emerging adults cope with stress in everyday life during a transition period and leads the Stress and Health Study (SHS). Natasha is also currently working with adults in a clinical setting, parents with teens experiencing anxiety and depression and young individuals seeking cognitive assessments.


Yi Yang Yap | 2018 - 2022 | PhD

Yang Yap completed his Bachelor of Psychology (with Honours) in 2017 at Monash University. For his Honours project, Yang was supervised by Dr Joshua Wiley and conducted daily research examining the bi-directional relations between psychosocial stress and sleep and the moderating role of coping strategies. For this research, he received a travel award from the Australasian Sleep Association and the 2018 Best Poster Presentation Award at Sleep DownUnder. Yang commenced his PhD in 2018 at the Behavioural Medicine Lab under the supervision of Dr Joshua Wiley, Dr Andrew Phillips, and Dr Jorja Collins and was awarded a Faculty Postgraduate Excellence Award for outstanding academic merit and research potential. Yang is one of the lead PhD student researchers of the Stress and Health Study (SHS), and his research explores how psychological stress, cortisol levels, EEG-assessed sleep, dietary intake, and eating behaviours interact on a day-to-day basis using intensive, longitudinal designs.


Jordan Maccora | 2019 - 2023 | PhD (Clinical)

Jordan Maccora completed his Bachelor of Psychology (with Honours) in 2016 at Monash University. He has gained experience working within both community-based residential and outreach mental health programs. Jordan previously worked at the Monash Be Active Sleep Eat facility and was involved in the development, co-ordination and publication of findings regarding the comparative analysis of alertness detection devices within a sleep deprivation protocol. Jordan commenced his PhD (Clinical Psychology) at Monash University in 2019 and was awarded a Monash Graduate Excellence Scholarship for outstanding marks. Under the supervision of Dr Joshua Wiley, Dr. Sheila Garland (Memorial University), and Justine Diggens (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre), his research will explore the utility of CBT-I and bright light exposure therapy with respect to sleep disturbance within oncology populations. He leads the SleepCare Trial.


Isabelle S. Smith | 2019 - 2023 | PhD (Clinical)

Isabelle Smith completed her Bachelor of Psychology in 2018, where she was awarded the Australian Psychological Society Prize for academic excellence in her final Honours year. During her undergraduate degree, Isabelle worked as a research assistant in areas of mother-infant attachment and maternal depression, anxiety and sleep. She commenced her PhD in clinical psychology at Monash University in 2019 and is supervised by Dr Joshua Wiley and Prof Karen Weihs (University of Arizona). Her research now is focused on trialling a transdiagnostic emotion-focused intervention that targets the emotional responses associated with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. She leads The CanCope Study.


David Tuck | 2019 - 2023 | PhD

David completed his Bachelor of Behavioural Studies (clinical psychology) with a co-minor in advanced psychology at Swinburne University in 2014. Since then he has combined his personal and professional interests by volunteering as a snowboarding guide with Disabled Wintersports Australia, and an assistant music therapist at Frankston Young Veterans and Families Wellbeing Centre. David completed the Graduate Diploma of Psychology Advanced at Monash University in 2017 whilst working concurrently as a research assistant with Dr Joshua Wiley. David’s research interests lay in preventative mental health and interdisciplinary investigations. His Graduate Diploma thesis investigated the relationship between posttraumatic growth and emotional intelligence. David began his PhD at Monash in 2019, investigating the factors that promote resilience to potentially traumatic events. His research supervisors are Dr Emily Berger, Dr Joshua Wiley, and Dr Lefteris Patlmazaglou.


Victoria Dax | 2020 - 2023 | PhD (Clinical)

Tory completed her Bachelor of Arts (with Honours) in Psychology at Monash University in 2018. In 2019 Tory worked at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre across multiple experience of care projects including the ‘Fear-Less’ project, a stepped-care intervention to help manage fear of cancer recurrence in people with metastatic melanoma and presented some of these results in a poster presentation at the 2019 VCCC Psycho-oncology Conference. Tory commenced her PhD (Clinical Psychology) in 2020 and under supervisors Dr. Joshua Wiley and Dr. Maria Ftanou (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre). Her research explores understanding the psychological sequelae of germ cell testicular cancer.

Honours Students

Yi Yang Yap | 2017 - 2017 | Honours

Yang Yap completed his Bachelor of Psychology (with Honours) in 2017 at Monash University. For his Honours project, Yang conducted daily research examining the bi-directional relations between psychosocial stress and sleep and the moderating role of coping strategies. For this research, he received a travel award from the Australasian Sleep Association and the 2018 Best Poster Presentation Award at Sleep DownUnder. He is currently undertaking a PhD in Psychology at Monash University.


Angie Phong | 2019 - 2019 | Honours

Angie Phong is a current Honours student completing her Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Monash University. She has interned as a Research Assistant across two research labs exploring the themes of sleep and neurodevelopment. In the Psychology Honours Program, she is supervised by Dr Joshua Wiley on a project exploring the protective effects of physical activity on stress and mood. Her research specifically examines how physical activity buffers the effects of daily stressors on negative affect, particularly within a population of university and college students. Her honours thesis uses data from three of our studies: ACES, DESTRESS, and SHS.


Lauren Ross | 2019 - 2019 | Honours

Lauren Ross completed her Bachelor of Law/Arts in 2018 at Monash University, majoring in the APAC Accredited Psychology course. During her undergraduate degree she worked as a Research Assistant in the Melbourne Dialectical Behavioural Therapy Centre. Lauren has also been employed as a Teacher’s Aide for 4 years, assisting children with learning and behavioural difficulties. In 2019 she commenced studying the Psychology Honours Program at Monash and is supervised by Dr Joshua Wiley. Her research explores the role of depression on outcomes of a sleep intervention in women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Her honours thesis uses data from the SleepWell Trial


Phuong (Flora) Le | 2020 - 2020 | Honours

Flora Le completed her Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) at Monash University in 2019. During her undergraduate, Flora received the Summer Research Scholarship at Monash University Accident Research Centre, working on the resilient factors in older adults’ driving ability. She also interned as a Research Assistant at the Behavioural Medicine Lab, working across two studies on the themes of sleep, stress and health. In the Psychology Honours Program, she is supervised by Dr Joshua Wiley. Her project explores the associations of daily activity composition with stress and affect and the moderating role of chronotypes. Her honours thesis uses data from three of our studies: ACES, DESTRESS, and SHS.


Cornelia Wellecke | 2020 - 2020 | Honours

Cornelia Wellecke has completed her Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology, at Monash University in 2019. She has been awarded the Stella Crossley Prize and Malcolm Macmillan Prize for the student who achieves the highest aggregate mark in second- and third-year psychology core subjects. During her undergraduate degree, Cornelia interned as a research assistant for two studies that explored sleep and wellbeing in teenagers and first-time mothers. In 2020, she commenced her Psychology Honours Program under the supervision of Dr Joshua Wiley. Using data from the CanCope study, her research investigates mindfulness and cognitive interventions for fatigue and sleep problems in cancer survivors.


Bronte Mathews | 2021 - 2021 | Honours

Bronté Mathews completed her Bachelor of Commerce and Arts at Monash University in 2020 and is currently undertaking Honours in Psychology supervised by Dr Joshua Wiley in 2021. Bronte’s thesis investigates the roles of perceived stress severity, controllability, and sex differences in engagement of coping strategies, drawing on data from the DESTRESS study. Bronté previously worked as a research assistant for the Stress and Health study in 2019-2020 and is assisting the Pepper Cognitive Flexibility study in 2021.


Lauren Pearson | 2021 - 2021 | Honours

Lauren completed her Bachelor of Psychology at Monash University in 2020. Lauren commenced her Honours in Psychology at Monash in 2021 under the supervision of Dr Joshua Wiley and Dr Maria Ftanou. Her Honours project involves investigating older adult referral rates and uptake of psychological services at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.


Rebecca Wallace | 2021 - 2021 | Honours

Bec completed her Bachelor of Science and Global Studies in 2019 at Monash University and commenced her Honours in Psychology at Monash in 2020. Bec’s thesis explores whether an emotion-focused intervention and lifestyle intervention improves quality of life among cancer survivors. Her thesis uses data from The CanCope Trial, an online trial aiming to help people who have had cancer cope with difficult emotions they may experience and improve mental health outcomes. Since 2020, Bec has also worked as a Research Assistant and Project Administrator for the SleepCare Trial being conducted at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Monash Health, which is exploring the utility of cognitive behavioural and bright light therapy to improve sleep and wellbeing in women with breast cancer.


Jeanette M. X. Y. Wong | 2021 - 2021 | Honours

Jeanette is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) at Monash University and is supervised by Dr Joshua Wiley. Her Honours project explores the association of sleep and physical activity with mood in women undergoing breast cancer treatment using data from the SleepWell Intervention trial.


Xin Xuan Yong | 2021 - 2021 | Honours

Xin Xuan Yong is currently doing her honours year completing her Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Monash University. For her honours thesis, she is supervised by Drs Joshua Wiley and Nicole Robinson, exploring the effectiveness of a novel robot (Pepper) delivered cognitive flexibility intervention. Specifically, her project examines changes in cognitive flexibility, depressive and anxiety symptoms. She also gathered data on participant’s expectations and satisfaction as part of this novel intervention.

Staff

James Jackson | 2018 - 2019 | Staff

James Jackson completed his Undergraduate Psychology major at Monash University and has interned as a research assistant for several studies with the Behavioural Medicine laboratory since 2018. He has a keen interest in Ecological Momentary Assessment and the ways stress interacts with upbringing, personality, and lifestyle. In 2019, James headed up the recruitment process and lead technical training sessions for the Stress and Health Study which examines the daily experiences of diet, physical activity, stress, and emotionality in international and inter-state students.


Rebecca Wallace | 2020 - 2022 | Staff

Bec Wallace completed her Bachelor of Science and Global Studies in 2019 at Monash University, and has commenced her Honours in Psychology at Monash in 2020. In 2021, Bec will travel to the Karolinska Institute to complete her research project and thesis. Bec is the Project Administrator for the SleepCare Trial being conducted at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Monash Health, which will explore the utility of cognitive behavioural and bright light therapy to improve sleep and wellbeing in women with breast cancer.
